Adult female who gave CPR after runner collapsed: 'She was dead. She flatlined — and then she breathed again'

Thanks to the quick piece of work of Ms. McKernan, her friends the Humphreys and a dr. who emerged from the oversupply, the young woman was revived and remains in stable status in infirmary

Every year, Jules McKernan gets re-certified to perform CPR, hoping she'll never put those breast-compression skills to utilise. Simply the off-duty nurse was glad to take them on Sunday as she, a bystander waiting at the finish line of Sunday'due south Sporting Life 10K for Kids with Cancer, saw a 23-year-former runner fall downwards dead 100 metres from the finish. Thank you to the quick work of Ms. McKernan, her friends the Humphreys and a doctor who emerged from the oversupply, the young woman was revived and remains in stable condition in infirmary. Ms. McKernan spoke with the Post's Sarah Boesveld Mon.

Q Then you were but continuing at the finish line, waiting for your sister Kirsten to cross…?
A I actually live in the edifice where the finish line is and and then at that place was probably a group of 10 of us going to cheer our friends on. We were nearly 100 metres ahead of the terminate line and my sister spotted me in the crowd and waved. A few minutes after that, that'due south when things started to unfold.

Q Did you see the immature woman drop?
A I didn't run into her driblet. Lisa and Rose Humphreys, who came to cheer on, I saw them helping this girl onto the footing — the girl'due south friend was there, besides. Rose was saying 'Somebody go get help!' I started to run towards the finish line [to get help] only I saw one of the guys in our group book it past me to go get help, so I turned around. Rose and Lisa had the girl in recovery position and so Rose shouted 'She doesn't have a pulse!' So they put her onto her back and Lisa began to open the airway. I stepped in and took over the airway and and then Rose was starting compressions. At that indicate, I heard somebody behind me say 'I'm a doctor.' And so Rose stepped back and the doctor started to do compressions and I was just holding the airway. We switched, the md and I, because I said 'Somebody needs to requite her jiff, she'south not animate.' So the doctor started to give her breath and I did compressions on her. And she didn't have a pulse.

Q So she was unconscious?
A Yeah. She was foaming at the oral fissure and her eyes were rolled dorsum. And she had no pulse and she wasn't breathing. It was really frightening.

Q How long were you trying to revive her?
A I was told information technology was most x minutes before the paramedics came and took over and transported her. Information technology felt like forever.

Q You're a trained nurse, simply you've never had to revive a person before?
A Not like this. I've been a nurse for v years and this is the first time I've had to practise chest compressions on everyone. And then it was a traumatic experience.

Q You work at Sick Kids. What do you do at that place?
A I piece of work on the transplant unit. We practise kidneys, livers, lungs, pocket-size bowels, pancreas and stomach transplants. We go some really sick kids, simply it never gets to that bespeak where I've ever had to exercise compressions.

Q What does it feel like to assistance return someone to life?
A I was kind of amazed that she is alive. At one point, I went to movement her arm and it merely went completely limp. That prototype is what I'k finding very difficult to get over. I hate to say it, only she was dead. She flatlined. It'due south kind of scary to think that tin happen to somebody that young. It'south amazing that there were people in that location who stepped upwards and did what had to be done while we waited for the paramedics. That is what basically saved her life.

Q I guess everyone should go become CPR training just in example this happens to them, huh?
A Oh yeah. For me information technology was my off twenty-four hours — I had no idea I would be whipping out my CPR skills. I'm simply glad that all the training paid off and that she'south alive and stable.
